....having a great time here in Hawaii. Relax, relax, and then relax some more....
Yesterday we rented a Mustang Convertible and went on a self-driven tour of the entire island. The scenery was something else....there's is something surreal about driving and looking to the left to see waves lapping on the shore just feet away from the car.....because during some stretches of our drive, we were literally inches away from the ocean.
The north of Oahu is quite rural.....small villages, little shacks selling fruit and shrimp you can buy from trucks and huts along the way. No malls, no starbucks....just good ol' island living. The island of Oahu is not that big and you can complete the entire island drive in a few hours. The weather in the north was a bit overcast, unlike the sun in Waikiki. The drive with the top down was very cooling! The wind was nice!
First stop, Dole Plantation:
TWO WORDS - Dole Whip. If there is any reason to stop here, it is for this.
The plantation is Hawaii's pineapple experience and is 10 minutes from historic Hailewa town. This is also the home of the world's largest maze, according to Guinness, anyway -- you can spend a few minutes or most of the day (depending on your sense of direction.....!) trying to find your way out of its almost 2 miles of paths! The gift shop here has grown since I was last here.....if you want anything at all that has a pineapple....you'll find it here. From pineapple pencils, books, pot holders, keychains, flashlights, candy, chocolate, tea, soap.....they got it! To actually do the activities is a one time thing only.....once you've done the maze, ridden the train, fed the Koi....you really don't need to come back to this place.....except for one reason. DOLE WHIP! That is why everytime we are in Hawaii we come to the plantation....gotta get some of that WHIP! Delicious .....sweet but tangy!
We stopped and had a quick lunch in Hailewa town.
Then we headed to sunset beach.....this is the beach where the surf can get a bit wild....thus surfers love it here. Today, the water was calmer than I remember it the last time we were here. We have video of that last visit when Alyssa was only 4 and she was sitting on the sand, a wave came and just about washed her away with it....thank goodness Doug was there to grab her!
Some of the scenery during the drive just downright brought me flashbacks of scenes from "LOST". There is a LOST tour that brings you to all the filming sites....but too much beach and pool time has left us no time to do that....perhaps next time.
We headed back into Waikiki around 4.....we wanted to stop to get groceries while we had the car which needed to be back at the rental by 7. We had a wonderful day!
